An attempted escaper's casualty group of five awarded to Guardsman G. Yeates, 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, who was taken prisoner during the Fall of Tobruk and killed whilst attempting to escape from captivity in July 1942

Godfrey Yeates was born at Gloucester, Gloucestershire in 1919 and enlisted with the Coldstream Guards prior to the Second World War. Stationed with the 3rd Battalion in Egypt at the outbreak of the war they formed part of the Garrison of Tobruk upon the fall of that port in June 1942. Yeates was taken prisoner with his Battalion on 20 June but was later confirmed as attempting to escape, his records state he was 'Presumed Died while escaping from the enemy Between 1 July 1942-31 July 1942. Yeates is commemorated upon the Alamein Memorial; sold together with copied casualty records and Commonwealth War Graves certificate.
