Five: Chief Petty Officer Air W. R. C. Scott, Fleet Air Arm, a Telegraphist Air Gunner

Walter Richard Charles Scott was born at Horsham, Sussex on 27 May 1912, he was a Boy Labourer prior to enlistment which he did on 27 May 1930. He first served as a Boy II and I Class before being promoted to Boy Telegrapher and later Telegraphist Air Gunner throughout his 1930's service and served on various ships including Furious, Courageous and Birmingham. He passed a Bombing course at R.A.F. Gosport on 14 June 1933.

He was promoted to Acting Leading Airman on 1 April 1940 on Perigrine and moves on to Condor serving from 15 August 1940 to 15 June 1941. He is promoted to Petty Officer Air on Daedalus on 23 December 1941. He serves on Condor, Merlin and Kestrel throughout 1942 and Daedalus, Waxwing, Asbury and Begum throughout 1943, and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer Air in August 1943. He remains with Begum until 14 April 1945. Begum at the time operated Avenger aircraft and Scott would have been Telegraphist Air Gunner on these. Once completing his time on Begum he returns to Daedalus.

He receives his L.S. & G.C. medal on 29 October 1945.

He is promoted to Acting Aircrewman in June 1948 and then to Aircrewman I in September 1950, during this time he served on Ocean, Terror, Peregrine and Daedalus on which he completes his service being pensioned on 7 July 1952. He received Prize Money to the value of £8-8.0 on 17 September 1949 for his war service on Daedalus.

He worked as a Radio Radar Engineer after leaving the Royal Navy.

He died on 21 July 1980 at Guildford, aged 67; sold together with a detailed research file to include his service papers, Second World War medal entitlement, death certificate and newspaper articles which relate to his involvement in an ocean rowing race at Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1943 and one of a team who sailed a yacht from Germany to Portsmouth in July 1946.
