Three: Private J. Charlton, 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, who was wounded on 1 June 1940 at La Panne and subsequently taken a Prisoner of War, in 1945 he was forced to take part in 'The Long March'

J. Charlton served with the 1st Battalion served in India, Chanak, Malt and Palestine before the Second World War. The 1st Battalion embarked for France in 1939 as part of the British Expeditionary Force crossing the Belgian Frontier in May 1940. Outgunned and outnumbered the Battalion was ordered to withdraw where they were eventually evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk. Charlton was an unlucky casualty who remained behind to be captured by the Germans on 1 June 1940 and was held at Stalag 9c (Mulhausen).

On 29 March 1945 the camp was evacuated and those presemt, including Charlton, were forced to march eastwards in advance of the American offensive. For some the march lasted four weeks before being freed by U.S. Army units. Those left in the camp were freed by troops of U.S. 3rd Army.
