(x) Pair: Chief Steward D. McArthur, Merchant Navy, who was killed in the sinking of the Cunard cargo ship S.S. Vardulia on 19 October 1935

Daniel McArthur was born at Greenock, Scotland on 9 April 1891 and joined the Merchant Navy, working first as a Ship's Cook. After serving through the Great War he was appointed Assistant Steward and worked on S.S. Colombia, performing four runs with her. Later joining Cordillera McArthur saw another four with her before joining Vardulia as Chief Steward.

This Cunard steamer was on a yoage between Hartlepool and Botwood, carrying coal in winter 1917. She foundered in rough weather an went down in the Mid-Atlantic. No evidence of her crew was ever found and it is assumed that none of them survived the sinking; sold together with copied service documents and an wreck report on Vardulia.
