An unusual and well-documented bombing raid casualty's pair awarded to Private S. Mays, Labour Corps, late 13th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment who died of wounds sustained in an air attack at Vierstraate on 19 October 1917

Septimus Mays was born at Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire on 3 February 1893, the son of John and Mary Mays of 4 Adelaide Street, Hessle Road, Hull. Educated at Hull Council School he followed his father into the family business. Enlisting with the Lincolnshire Regiment Mays was posted to the 13th Battalion. Transferred to the 52nd Battalion, Labour Corps on 12 March 1917 with the service number 30875, he entered the war in France. They were working at Vierstraate on 20 October that same year when a German aircraft dropped a bomb which left him badly wounded. Mays was taken to Locre Hospice but died the next day, he is buried at the Locre Hospice Cemetery. De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour quotes his commanding officer who stated:

'[...] that he was a most efficient soldier, and a great favourite among his comrades.'
