Alfred Cecil Long was born at Ropley, Hampshire on 27 July 1899 and worked as a farmer's assistant prior to enlisting with the Royal Navy on 20 August 1917. Appointed Sick Berth Assistant he was posted to the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar at Gosport on 4 September 1917. He was to serve here for the entire war, not being posted abroad until 12 July 1919 when he was sent to the Malta Hospital.
Returning to Britain in December 1923 Long joined the Medical School in Greenwich in January, 1924 remaining there until March when he was once again posted to Haslar. The bulk of the inter-war period was spent between Haslar and Malta although he was to spend a year at Portland Hospital, being appointed Sick Berth Petty Officer there on 16 January 1934. Further advanced Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer on 9 June 1937 at Malta Long was posted to the Battleship Repulse the next year on 18 June.
With this vessel he served through the Arab Revolt, Repulse being stationed at Haifa to maintain stability in the region. Long was discharged from service on 19 August 1939 but soon returned to the colours with the destroyer Colombo. This vessel began the war with the Home Fleet, capturing the German merchantman Henning Oldendorff off Iceland early in the war. Long was later posted to RNAS East Haven where his record states he served as a Temporary Wardmaster on 8 May 1944.
After the war he was once again discharged from service; sold together with copied service papers.
