Richard Sheridan-Patterson was born on 26 November 1902 and was appointed Midshipman in the Royal Navy on 15 May 1916. Continuing with his career into the post-war era, his officers' service record includes such glowing testimonials as: 'Excellent officer: shows great promise' and: 'Excellent manners, delightful personality and good physical skills'. Later transferring from surface vessels to the submarine service, by 1939 he was in command of H.M.S. Osiris (N67) and took her into the Mediterranean, before being reassigned in 1940. He retired on 26 November 1947.
