Sidney Walter Wanstall was born at Cheltenham on 21 August 1884 and worked as a marine fireman prior to enlisting on 27 August 1902 at Vivid II. Posted afloat for the first time on 20 June 1903 with Hogue his pre-war service included Suffolk, Andromeda and Active. On the outbreak of the Great War Wanstall was stationed with Majestic however he was stationed away to Erin less than a week later on 11 August 1914. With this vessel he saw service with the Grand Fleet throughout the war, being present at the Battle of Jutland although Erin was not heavily engaged. Posted ashore on 20 February 1920 Wanstall served for two more years before being discharged on 12 June 1922.
