Archinald Ernest Tickle was born at St Cleet, Cornwall on 6 August 1874 and was a labourer by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 20 September 1894. He earned his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 8 January 1914. During the Great War he served aboard Duke of Edinburgh from 23 June 1914-25 November 1915 and joined Dublin on 28 March 1916, with whom he served for the remainder of the Great War. At Jutland she served in the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron alongside Southampton, Birmingham and Nottingham and fired 117 6-inch shells. Together with Southampton they attacked and sank a destroyer. Both ships, however, sustained severe damage. Three crew members were killed and 27 wounded when Dublin received five 5.9 shell inch hits from the cruiser SMS Elbing and eight 4.1-inch shell hits from Stuttgart (possibly also Frauenlob and Hamburg).
