Alfred William Brooker was born at Dorking, Surrey, on 20 August 1874 and joined the Royal Marines on 20 October 1892. He did indeed serve aboard the Alacrity but at the time of the China 1900 operations was based with the Portsmouth Division at Deal. He was discharged in October 1904 but re-enlisted on 8 March 1905 and earned his L.S. & G.C. in August 1912. He was discharged for a second time in March 1914. Upon the outbreak of the Great War, he joined the Royal Australian Navy at Melbourne on 7 December 1914, being noted as a Pensioner of the Royal Marine Light Infantry. During the Great War he served at Cereberus and thence afloat with H.M.A.S. Melbourne from 20 August 1918-30 June 1919, being advanced Officer's Steward 1st Class on 20 March 1919.
