Frederick Augustus Harvey was born at Lambeth, London on 1 September 1880 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 7 September 1898. Completing his training with Pembroke II his first posting afloat was with Dido before moving on to Hussar with which he was promoted Stoker Class I. Transferring from her to the cruiser Isis Harvey was to join her on China Station during the Boxer Rebellion. Isis served here for the duration of the conflict and afterwards, Harvey did not leave her until 1902.
Between the wars he was to serve with a number of vessels including the transport Assye and the battleships Venerable and Formidable. The last was to be his final posting before being discharged ashore on 9 September 1910. Harvey joined the Royal Naval Reserve the next day and was thus still in service on the outbreak of the Great War.
Mobilised for service on 7 August 1914 Harvey was posted to the Scout Cruiser H.M.S. Blonde on 3 September. He was to serve with her for the duration of the war, going ashore in 1918 to see out his final year of service with the Royal Naval Training Establishment Shotley. Harvey was finally discharged for good on 8 April 1919; sold together with a copied medal roll and service record.
