William Fitzgerald was born at Bermondsey and was a bottlewasher by trade upon his enlistment at Bermondsey in May 1894. Having served in India (Medal & 2 clasps), he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal as per A.O. 286 of October 1912. Serving during the Great War in France with the 2nd Battalion from 19 October 1914, he suffered a gun shot wound on 8 November 1914 and was discharged in May 1916.
