Patrick Gallacher was born at Ballybofey, County Donegal, and enlisted on 23 July 1890, he served in India between 14 September 1893-16 April 1898. He returned to the U.K. after his service in India but was later sent to South Africa on 5 November 1899-4 February 1900 where he was wounded in the engagement near the Tuegla River on 15 December 1899.

He was discharged on 11 January 1901 as a result of being medically unfit.

His service papers reveal a plethora of misdemeanors during his service which includes stays in prison of 184 days and a further spell of 327 days.
