Joseph Stanier was a native of Birmingham, born in 1857 and worked there as a bedstead maker before attesting for the 38th Regiment of Foot on 3 June 1879. Posted to Malta the next year on 9 August 1880 he was to see over a years service with the garrison.

Posted to Egypt during the Anglo-Egyptian War he remained unengaged and earned a medal without a clasp. Returning to Britain on 6 October 1882 it was not long before he was back in Egypt arriving on 16 January 1883. After another stint with the Malta garrison he returned to the country, taking part in the Battle of Kirbekan in 1885 under General Earle.

Returning to Britain on 5 October 1885 as a Corporal Stanier was transferred to the Army Reserve two months later. He was finally discharged on 2 June 1891.
