Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp Suakin (1658. Pte. W. Jones. 1/Shropr. L. I.); Khevdive's Star, unnamed as issued, pitting, edge bruising, nearly very fine (2)

William Jones was born at Shrewsbury, Shropshire in 1862, enlisting there on 21 August 1880. Posted to the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot, later the Shropshire Light Infantry, he joined them in Egypt for service in the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. Jones arrived on 10 August 1882, but did not see action instead spending six months stationed with the Army of Occupation.

Transferred to the Malta Garrison the Battalion spent two years there from February 1883-26 February 1885. Returning to Egypt they were ordered to the Sudan for service at Suakin for the next year, being present here during General Graham’s expedition in March that year. Returning to Egypt Jones was stationed in Cairo from 16 April 1886, remaining their until 16 September of that year.

Finally posted to Britian he joined the Army Reserve on 18 September, seeing nearly six years of service with them he was discharged on 30 August 1892.
