Thomas Gardner was born at Portsea, Hampshire on 13 September 1863 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 6 April 1879. Reaching his majority with the cruiser Minotaur on 13 September 1881 Gardner saw intermittent service between the shore establishment Duke of Wellington and a series of vessels over the next few years. Post to the cruiser Iris on 8 December 1883, he was to serve with her for some years as part of the Mediterranean Fleet. It was here that he became entitled to the Egypt Medal, without clasp, for time spent in the active war zone.
Leaving Iris on 8 March 1887 he spent the next two years at the torpedo school H.M.S. Vernon.
Gardner continued in service, spending time at various stations, with a major stay in Australia aboard such vessels as Pylades, Mildura and Katoomba. By the outbreak of the Great War he was stationed ashore at Figuard, serving here from 2 August 1914-18 April 1919. By the end of the war Gardner had spent some fourty years in service and was finally discharged; sold together with copied research including service papers.
