Thomas Cage was born at Thurston near Bury St. Edmunds in March 1836, he was previously a Labourer prior to joining the Army. He attested for the 75th Regiment at Bury St. Edmunds on 24 March 1855. With a brief period of training he was then sent to India on the 21 July 1855 where he spent a total of 6 years and 284 days, serving with the Regiment at the Relief of Lucknow and Delhi. After returning to the Britain he was sent to Gibraltar leaving from Cork on the 20 April 1867 and arriving a week later, he spent 1 year and 170 days there. In October 1868 the Regiment left for China aboard the troopship Himalaya and arriving in Hong Kong on 21 December 1868 he was to spend 2 years and 127 days in China. A section of the Regiment was to proceed to Singapore for 208 days. He finally spent a further 3 years and 205 days in the Cape of Good Hope. His total overseas service was 14 years and 264 days.
He was discharged on 4 April 1876 at Newry at the end of his second period of 'Limited Engagement', having served for a total of 21 years and 13 days, with his Character and Conduct being 'Very Good'. In addition to being awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal and gratuity at the time of discharge, he was also in possession of 4 Good Conduct badges; sold together with assorted photocopied paperwork, muster rolls etc.
