Robert Frank Davis was born at St. Pancras, London and worked as a Greengrocer prior to enlisting on 9 July 1889 at Hounslow with the Royal Fusiliers. Posted to the 1st Battalion in India on 11 March 1892, he returned to Britain on 15 February 1897 and joined the Army Reserve that same day.
Returning to the colours upon the outbreak of the Boer War Davis was posted to the 2nd Battalion, entering the country with them on 22 October 1899. He remained with them there until 29 December 1901 when he returned to Britain, joining the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion the next day. Davis was discharged fully on 14 April 1902.
