George Rose was born on 14 June 1876 at Adisham, near Dover. He was a Ropemaker prior to enlisting into the Royal Navy on the 14 June 1894. He served aboard Alecto between 17 November 1897-14 January 1899; during this time he spent 14 days in the cells for bad behaviour. His service continued to be blighted with spells in the cells, hard labour and being run ashore.
After the outbreak of the Great War he served on Phaeton between 9 February 1915-18 April 1916; he was later detained for 28 days for assault. He served on Astraea between 24 June 1916-9 October 1917 while she was operating off the coast of East Africa. His behaviour remained unfortunately consistent, with 14 days in the cells and 90 days hard labour. He completed his service in the Royal Navy on Pembroke on 20 February 1918.
