The Crimea medal awarded to Private J. Higgins, 88th Regiment, who was twice wounded in action
Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (2151 Pte. John. Higgins. 88th. Regt.), Regimentally impressed naming, lugs removed from top clasp and private rivets, nearly very fine
John Higgins was born at Tierland, Galway, Ireland and enlisted on 1 July 1846 into the Connaught Rangers. Serving in North America for just over a year he later had 2 years 3 months service in the Crimea. Twice wounded during this time, first on 20 September 1854 at Alma, his service papers note 'contusion by a shell splinter' and was slightly wounded in the final attack on the Redan on 8 September 1855 and again his papers note 'on the head with a bullet slightly'.
Higgins is entitled to an Indian Mutiny with clasp Central India and is down as "Higgans" on the roll but with the correct number 2151 and spends a total of 9 years and 11 months in the East Indies. He appeared in the Regimental Defaulter's Book three times and was tried by Court Martial on one occasion eventually being discharged on 31 March 1868 being unfit for further service.
