Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Qr-Mr M. Clinton. 82nd Regt.), officially impressed naming, minor contact marks, edge bruising, very fine
Michael Clinton attested for the 69th Regiment of Foot on 19 March 1827 at Athlone, Ireland. He served first as a Private being appointed Corporal on 25 April 1829 and further promoted Sergeant before the year was out on 29 December. Posted to the West Indies on 24 May 1834 he served there until March 1839 when the Regiment was posted to North America. Interestingly Clinton appears on a record as service with the rank of Colour-Sergeant in Canada in 1841 although this promotion does not appear on his service papers.
Returning to Britain on 16 September 1942 Clinton was promoted Quartermaster-Sergeant on 10 April 1943 while here, assisting Quartermaster J. Hollis. The 69th was posted to the Mediterranean on 13 December 1847 and it was here that Hollis retired in 1849. Clinton - by this time an experienced N.C.O. who had been assisting the previous incumbent for some time - was promoted to replace him in June 1849.
Still in service with the Regiment on the outbreak of the Crimean War he was posted to the 82nd Regiment on 2 September 1855. Serving as their Quartermaster for the duration of the campaign, a difficult task in the Crimea where British logistics were famously poor. He appears to have retired not longer after the conclusion of the campaign, not later than 1861; sold together with copied and typed research comprising army lists, service papers and letters relating to the appointment of the recipient as Quartermaster.
