Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (9163. By. Q.M. Sgt. A. J. Duffield. R.A.), good very fine

Alfred James Duffield was born at Chelsea, London in January 1857, the son of James and Lydia Duffield. Enlisting at Chelsea on 15 March 1873 with the Royal Artillery, Duffield was posted to India almost immediately being promoted Bombardier there on 3 May 1877. Returning to Britain on 6 March 1881 be was advanced Corporal on 17 November 1882 and Sergeant on 24 July 1883. This last advancement coming just before another posting to India on 6 September 1883. Duffield was promoted for the final time to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 May 1887 and was discharged at Netley on 18 May 1897. He found further work with the Army however, taking the role of Barrack Warden at Brecon. Duffield died in late summer 1927; sold together with copied service papers and census data.
