Joseph John Bowskill was born at Nottingham on 15 November 1899 and joined Ganges as Boy 2nd Class on 14 August 1915. Bowskill served on Royal Sovereign from 18 April 1916-12 November 1918 (British War & Victory Medal Pair).
Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1933, he served on Emerald during the Second World. Bowskill died of injuries sustained when she collided with the Dauntless in the Malacca Straits on 16 June 1941. Emerald suffered flooding to her forward engine room and structural damage amidships. Aged 41, Bowskill was one of fourteen who lost their lives and is commemorated on the Portsmouth War Memorial.
