Walter Sartain was born at Hanley, Staffordshire in 1888, the son of William and Maria Sartain of 5 Thosley Street, Hanley. Working as a potter's mould maker prior to enlistment with the North Staffordshire Regiment he was later to transferred into the Machine Gun Corps. Posted to the 59th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps this unit found itself heavily engaged during the German Spring Offensive. Sartain survived the fighting with an award for his bravery and was demobilised on 30 September 1919. He went on to work as a Colliery Surface Worker while living at 2 Shotley Street, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire; sold together with copied research comprising census data, M.I.C. and medal rolls as well as extracts from the Birmingham Post and London Gazette.
