William Edward Long was born at Henley-on-Thames in 1892 and served in France with the Gloucestershire Regiment from 9 August 1915. Having won his M.M. whilst serving with the 14th Battalion, he transferred to the 10th Battalion and was admitted to hospital with 'pyrexia of unknown origin' on 31 August 1916. Thence transferred to the 369th Mechanical Transport Company (Fulham), Army Service Corps, Long tragically died on 11 November 1918 and is buried in Brookwood Cemetery. Aged just 28, he was the husband of Rose Annie Long of 107 Walton Street, Chelsea; sold together with his two pressed card identity tags.
