Norman Stephenson was born at Newcastle in 1895 and was a machinist by trade upon his joining the Irish Guards at Lemington in December 1915. He served in France with the 1st Battalion from 13 November 1917 having been qualified as a Bomber & Lewis Gunner. Stephenson suffered from bronchitis and pleurisy in March 1918 and was returned home.
