Herbert James Coward was born in 1898 and worked as a Bottler in a brewery prior to enlisting in 1917. His service records note time in the Machine Gun Corps prior to enlisting with the Tank Corps. Posted to the 93rd Tank Reserve Battalion at Chisledon on 16 February 1917. Entering the war in France on 1 September 1918 he joined the 7th Battalion, Tank Corps on 21 September. This unit went into action a week later during the Canadian attack on the Canal du Nord around Bourlon. The Battalion comprised 16 tanks during the action.
Coward continued to serve in France until 12 January 1919 when he returned to Britain. Transferring to the Reserve on 30 December of that same year; sold together with an original Tank Corps cap Badge.
