John William Thompson was born at Durham in 1896, the son of George and Mary Thompson of 24 Southburn Terrace, West Liverpool. He entered the war in France on 8 July 1915 with the Cameron Highlanders as a Private and was discharged to a commission on 29 May 1917, joining the 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers as a Lieutenant. Later he served attached to the Gordon Highlanders 52nd (Graduated) Battalion with the rank of Captain; sold together with copied research comprising M.I.C., London Gazette entry and census data as well as medal rolls.
