Francis Raymond Lovegrove was born at Hackney in 1894 and worked as a labourer for the Port of London Authority prior to enlisting on 7 March 1913. Posted first to India and then South Africa Lovegrove was still with this unit of the outbreak of the Great War, he entered the war in France on 19 November 1915. Serving in this theatre until 8 February 1916 before being transferred to Egypt he was to serve in the east for the rest of the war. Lovegrove was demobilised after the war on 17 August 1919.
