Charles Knipe was born and enlisted at Baston, Lincolnshire, entering the war at Gallipoli on 18 July 1915. The battalion saw heavy fighting around Chocolate Hill and Scimitar Hill, Captain Howard Hansen was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during these battles on 9 August. Knipe was present at Gallipoli until October 1915 when he fell seriously ill and was evacuated to Alexandria. He died there on 29 October 1915 and was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery; sold together with typed research and photographs of newspaper cuttings and photographs along with copied research comprising Commonwealth War Graves details, M.I.C., Soldiers died in the Great War entry and maps of the Gallipoli theatre.
