George Montague Hedgman was born on 31 January 1892 at Hoxton, London and was a cooper by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 20 July 1915. During the Great War he served aboard Earl of Peterborough from 21 September 1915 until his demobilisation on 28 May 1919. In that period she was dispatched to the Eastern Mediterranean upon completion for service with the fleet there. Early in 1916 she shelled Turkish positions in the Dardanelles and during the remainder of the war was active against Turkish units in Egypt, Palestine and Turkey itself; sold together with his original waxed Certificate of Service and photograph of him.
