1914-15 Star (J.39011, H. G. Sargent, Boy. 1., R.N.), note misspelled surname; British War and Victory Medals (J.39011 H. G. Sargeant. A.B. R.N.), edge bruise and contact wear, overall very fine (3)
Henry George Sargeant was born at Hackney, London on 24 December 1898 and worked as a suitcase marker prior to enlistment on 17 March 1915. Posted to Vengance on 16 December 1915 he saw East African service with her, notably the capture of Dar-es-Salaam. When Vengance returned to Britain Sargeant remained on the Cape Station, first with Hyacinth between March-May 1917 and later with the merchant cruiser H.M.S. Princess from 15 May. Posted to another merchant cruiser Macedonia on 15 August 1917 he was promoted Able Seaman with her on 16 October.
Returning to Britain on 14 August 1918 Sargeant was to serve ashore for the rest of the war. This did not conclude his military service however as he was posted to the insect class gunboat Glowworm on 12 October 1918 as she was preparing for service with the Archangel Expeditionary Force. He served with her until 31 March 1919; this was a stroke of good fortunate as later that same year an ammunition barge exploded next to the vessel, killing her commander Lieutenant-Commander Sebald Green.
Sergeant returned to Britain and briefly served at Glory IV before being demobilised on 9 June 1919; sold together with copied service papers.
