Charles Webb was born at Bermondsey, London in 1890, the son of Charles James Webb of 326 Saint James Road, Birmingham. Attesting with the Medical Staff Corps on 13 December 1892 he saw Home Service until 11 March 1901 when he was posted to South Africa as a Medical Attendant with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Serving as a Corporal Webb’s Boer War service was during the guerrilla phase of the fighting rather than during any of the set-piece actions.

Returning to Britain on 16 April 1905 he undertook a number of courses including Army Sanitation and Signalling. Discharged at his own request on 21 August 1912 Webb returned to the colours on 7 October 1914, entering the war in the Mediterranean with the rank of Corporal on 7 October 1914. Promoted Sergeant on 8 January 1915 he was further advanced Staff Sergeant the next month and Sergeant-Major on 8 June.

Unfortunately, his years of service had started to catch up with him and he was discharged as no longer physically fit on 12 September 1916; sold together with copied research including medal rolls, census data and service papers.
