India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Bhootan (85 H Barton. Hms 55th Regt), minor pitting, slight edge bruise, very fine

Henry Barton was born at Worcester Street, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in 1838 and worked as a Tailor before attesting for service with the 55th Regiment on 9 October 1857 at Bromsgrove. After 8 years on home service Barton joined his Regiment in India and saw service in the Bhootan campaign, also called the Duar War. The fighting was often of a guerrilla nature and the main set piece actions centred upon the British storming the fort of Dewangiri. The war lasted around five months and the Regiment returned to India the next year, being stationed at Chukrata.

Barton was uninjured in the fighting; however, he did later claim a disability allowance from the government as a result of ‘general debility’ brought on by the climate in India and Bhutan. He received this, although it was noted that he would likely recover. Barton was discharged on 9 April 1877 and listed his intended employment upon leaving as Sailmaker. His record notes that he had served in the East Indies from 1863.
