The Owen-Rooke Collection | Edward 'the Confessor' (1042-1066), 'Hammer Cross' Type, Penny, 1059-1062, Oxford, Heregod, + E[D]PARD RA RE• crowned and draped bust right, sceptre before, rev. + HAREGOD ON OXE, short voided cross with 'hammer cross' terminals, annulet at centre, 1.29g, 8h (SCBI 9 [Ashmolean], 975-977, cf. 975 same dies; SCBI 20 [Mack], 1258 [reading OXENEX]; North 828; BMC XI; Spink 1182), creased and with a flan split at 9 o'clock and running through the bust, nevertheless boldly struck up with a pleasant cabinet tone, near extremely fine, an extremely rare reading, known from only two recorded specimens
