Edward IV, First Reign (1461-1470), Quarter-Ryal, 1464-1465, Tower, EDWARD DI GRA REX ANGL, legend commences at 6 o'clock, square-topped shield dividing rose and sun, lys below, E flanked by pellets above, all inside quatrefoil, cusps plain, trefoils in spandrels, rev. (m.m.) EXALTABITVR * IN * GLORIA * large rosette stops, floriate cross, leopards in angles, sun at centre, all in double-octofoil, cusps and spandrels plain, 1.89g [29.17grns], 3h, m.m. rose / sun (Blunt & Whitton, type V/VI; Webb-Ware dies 3/3; Schneider I, 394 same dies; North 1560; Spink 1965), spade marked and concave from soil-extraction, otherwise notably 'fresh' for issue, originally lustrous, struck details better than very fine, an extremely rare variety, one of only 4 known
Of the known corpus, only three other specimens are known, in the British Museum; C E Blunt Collection and the Schneider 394 = Lockett 1543 example
