12th-13th Century, Plantagenets, Shortcross Pennies (6), including: Henry II (1154-1189) (2), Class Ib1, Wincester, Reiner, crowned bust facing, curls 2/5, rev. + REINER • ON • WIN, voided shortcross with quatrefoils in angles, 1.39g, 7h (SCBI 56 [Mass] 509ff; Winchester Mint 2478ff; North 963; Spink 1344); additionally, Class Ic, London, Raul, as last but cruder bust, rev. [+RAV]L • ON • LVNDE, as before, 1.36g, 7h (North 964; Spink 1345); also, Richard I 'the Lionheart' (1189-1199) Pennies (2), Class 3b, London, Ricard, as before, but whiskers for beard, rev. + RICARD · ON · LVND: as before, 1.45g, 4h (Spink 1347), minor depression by right cheek and a trace off-centre, otherwise pleasingly cabinet toned and with an excellent portrait for this King, an attractive very fine, scarce; another, Class 4a, London, Stivene, as last, but of cruder style, rev. + STIVENE · ON · LVN, as last, 1.41g, 10h (North 967; Spink 1348); lastly, John 'Lacklands' (1199-1216) (2), Class Vb1, London, Adam, refined portrait, X like St Andrew's cross, rev. + ADAM • ON • LVNDE, as before, 1.34g, 4h (Spink 1351); another, Class 5c, London, Walter, rev. + WALTER • ON • LVN, as before, 1.43g, 1h (Spink 1352), variable tone, some lightly clipped, otherwise fine to very fine unless stated, an interesting academic assemblage (6)
