"Confidence - The Post Boy", oil on canvas, in a dark brown frame (68.5cm. x 90cm.) by Robert Hannah (1812-1909).
This is believed to be the only known contemporary depiction in an oil painting of a Penny Red on cover, cancelled by a Maltese Cross postmark.
Illustrated both as the frontispiece, and on the back cover of the book jacket of "Encyclopaedia of the Maltese Cross cancellations of Great Britain and Ireland" by Professor David Rockoff and Mike Jackson, Volume 3 (2011).
A magnificent record of a whistling post boy, carrying a brass posthorn, going about his duties. An important painting for the advanced philatelist and avid student of British Postal History .
