Second Expedition
1902 (17 Mar.) British 1d. postal stationery card to Dover, the value has been boxed off in blue crayon (as not valid) and bears Berbera despatch c.d.s., large "T" in circle, boxed "postage due/ annas" and "1d/i.s./a." applied in London with Aden (22.3) c.d.s. Some light age faults. The message from the Somali Field Force reads, "There are no stamps in this country, but we expect an issue shortly..." and was sent by Lieut. J.R. Welland. A good card from the small second expedition

Lieut. Welland served throughout the second expedition, in the third expedition he was invalided out, returning to duty in December. In January 1904, during the fourth expedition, he was killed while attending to a wounded hospital assistant at the battle of Jidbali
