1851 laid paper, 6d. slate-violet strip of three (left stamp touched at left and cut-into at foot), each with central target cancel on 1851 (1.12) from New Carlisle Gaspe to France, showing despatch datestamp, manuscript "15", framed "colonies/&c.art 12" and Calais entry c.d.s. (23.12) in red and, on reverse, Chatham (in blue), Peticodiac and Sackville (New Brunswick) transit datestamps. The largest recorded multiple of the laid paper 6d. on cover. Note: The franking paid the 3d. overland rate to Nova Scotia and the colonial packet rate of 15d. currency from Halifax to the U.K. The mail was closed at Sackville exchange office and the letter carried on vessel "Asia" which arrived at Liverpool on 20th December. This is the only known cover to a foreign country using this routing through the Maritimes.
