(x) Senegal
1747 Pair of autograph letters written in French from Galant, one headed at Fort Saint Joseph, by Du Liron, an employee of the Compagnie du Senegal or its successor, the Compagnie Mississippi de Paris. The Fort, on the Senegal River, was an important point for commerce and the slave trade. In the earlier letter Du Liron requests permission to return to France, and refers to the Niger River, thought incorrectly to be linked to the Senegal River. He relates an adventure that he had. The later letter written to a cousin refers to sending it via England, and advises of his appointment as Garde Magazin General. He is due a bonus for the times he has moved inland resulting in great discoveries. Both with transcriptions (2)
