Russia
(Mathilde Kschessinska)
1917 (August1) Autograph letter written by Joseph Kschessinskii (1868-1942), brother of the prima ballerina who was mistress to the future Nicholas II. Written in Russian from Belsk, and incomplete (as per his request to destroy it), he refers to the "horror of the general situation...I am tormented with sadness and melancholy for Russia. Robbery, dissolute behaviour, fratricidal...It is complete anarchy, monsters and scoundrels are reigning instead of Tsars, it is hard to say what will happen to Russia" A dramatic 4pp letter with an English translation.
