Russia
(Tsar Paul I)
1801 Autograph letter written by Louis Charles Victor de Riquet de Caraman, Louis XVIII's representative to Russia, discussing the impact of the murder of Tsar Paul I on European relations. Following the Tsar's "unexpected death" Carman suggests that the character of Tsar Alexander I might affect current events and in particular relations between Russia and France. He suggests that the new Tsar may not be able to resist Napoleon's moves towards central Europe. He refers to the English fleet being at the gates of Copenhagen. Admiral Nelson had just defeated the Danes.
Written in French from Berlin to the counter revolutionary Bishop of Nancy, Anne Louis Henri de La Fare, with an address panel and red wax seal , care of his Secretary in Vienna. (With an English translation)
