Cecil John Rhodes (1854-1902)
1897 Two autograph letters signed "C.J.Rhodes" written to J.W. Roussouw, a magistrate in the Cape Colony. The first dated April 25/ 1897 refers to the Second Matabele Rebellion that followed soon after the ill fated Jameson Raid in which Rhodes was implicated. "Thanks for greeting me again on my return. I think time will heal all troubles but I shall always remember with gratitude your kind letter to me in Matabeleland when the clouds looked very heavy". The second undated letter reads - "It is always a pleasure to hear from you for you have been consistent through bad as well as good times". Rhodes disliked writing and comments relating to current political issues are infrequently found (2)
