H.M.S. Eclipse
1901- 1904 The log book, journal and photograph album compiled by Mr C.H. Philips, Midshipman aboard HMS Eclipse. The logbook begins in June 1901 with the commissioning of the Cruiser under the command of Captain H.R.S. Stokes. Aside from recording the progress of the ship until December 1902 there are numerous pen and ink and watercolour drawings and sketches, diagrams and maps to the highest standard. Drawings of Singapore Harbour, Malta Chin Kiang Lu, the Yangtse Approaches, Russia's Overland Route to the Far East, a folding hand drawn watercolour map titled "China" with details of the China Station, ships of the Station, Ports with British Consulates and largest ship on station that can enter each port.
The Journal dated March 1903 - August 1904 begins at Hong Kong with vivid descriptions, includes detailed diagrams of the Harbour, Wei-hai-Wei, plans of the ship on waterproof linen, a watercolour map of the Eastern Hemisphere, the Cemulpo Naval Action, Port Arthur, and a map of Operations in the Far East. Signed off at Singapore on 29 August 1904 by Captain Stokes and the Chaplain, H.E. Roberts.
The photograph album of 130 images is titled "Photos taken during the Commission of HMS Eclipse on the Chinese Station from 1901 (May) to 1904 (November), a great and glorious time. Joined May 31st at Sheerness as naval cadet, left Nov.15th at Portsmouth as Sub. Lieutenant". Included is a printed programme of Entertainment to celebrate the Anniversary of the Commissioning of the Ship, Yokosuka, May 30th 1902, printed at the Japan Gazette Office.
