The Accession of Queen Victoria
1837 (June 16-20) Five autograph letters written by the Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne to Sir Herbert Taylor, Private Secretary to King William IV, who died on 20 June and was immediately succeeded by Princess Victoria.
16 June - Lord Melbourne summonses a Council to agree a form of prayer to read in the Churches and Chapels on Sunday next for His Majesty's recovery
19 June - The state of the King's health and a reference to Queen Adelaide
20 June - Lord Melbourne acknowledges receipt of a letter communicating the death of the King and refers to the young 18 year old Queen. "I have seen the Queen. Nothing could be more composed, nothing more feeling...than her behaviour. She expressed the warmest affection for her Uncle, and the deepest concern for his loss. She also expressed her intention of immediately writing to the Queen {Queen Adelaide}and for whom, I undertake, she feels a strong and most affectionate interest."
22 June - Respecting the Queen's Household
22 June - Question of Queen Charlotte's Will shall be immediately considered.
A copy letter dated 20 June from Sir Herbert Taylor to Lord Melbourne respecting the difficulties likely to arise in the arrangement of the late King's Privy Purse.
A copy letter from James Hudson to Lord Melbourne advising that Sir Herbert Taylor has returned all the official Boxes and is ready to give up his official Keys and those of His late Majesty, which latter are in the keeping of the Queen (Dowager).
