Elizabethan Privy Council, First French War of Religion (1562-63)
1564 (November) warrant addressed to the Treasurer and Chamberlaines of the Exchequer with integral address panel, ordering payment of £50 to "John Awger as the Queen's reward in consideration that a hoye [small sloop] of his being in the late wars [with France] pressed in her highness service to convery victuals unto Hewhaven [Le Havre] was sunk by the French at Colbeck and the said Awger taken prisoner." Signed by Edward Clinton, Sir Edward Rogers, Sir Francil Knollys, William Cecil (Lord Burleigh), Sir William Petre, Sir John Mason and Sir Richard Sackville. Very fine, of great historical significance and a superb group of signatures.
