1684/5 (8 Jan.) letter signed at Whitehall with integral address panel "For the Duke of Ormond" reading "Being informed that advantage may be taken of ye absence of Charles Playdell my Sollicitor at Law in Ireland, in a certaine Tryall to be had there next Terme on ye case herewith sent you, and his attendance here at this time being very necessary to my service, I desire that if it appeare he may in Law be discharged yt. you will Recomend him to the Just favour of the Judged of the Kings Bench where the Tryall is to be had."
Signed in the hand of King James, "Your most affectionate friend James"

Enclosing a document in the same hand titled "The Case" which refers to a Mr. John Levett, arrested in Dublin at the "Suite of Capt. Edward Brabazon in a feigned accon of 5000 (lb) taken out of a City Court ... "Mr. Charles Playdell, Mr. Smith & Mr. Page became bayle for him before the Lord Chief Justice & ye accon was removed into the Keng's Bench. Afterwards Capt. Brabazon & his wife file a Declaracon against Mr. Lovett for speaking some words against Mrs. Brabazon which were actionable.".

Document with split along fold on reverse leaf otherwise well preserved. A remarkable piece of history with Irish interest, most unusual with enclosure.
