Abyssinian Field Force
1868 (8 Apr.) stampless "Abyssinian Letter" to Bristol "Via Marseilles" and marked, "D.N. Strong Lieut,/Coms detachment/1st Bengal Lancers" with manuscript "10" charge mark, the reverse with a good strike of the "field force post office/abyssinia" c.d.s. (15.4) in black with the similar "F.F." duplex (16.4), London and Bristol (4.5) c.d.s.; with the original letter from Camp Antalo to his mother which includes the following, "I have only just arrived here to take command of the cavalry but today I have recd an order to escort treasure by double marches to Magdala ... I have to ride behind wretched overladen mules 30 miles a day and they go about 2 miles and hour." and includes "Stamps are not procurable here, so you will have to pay for this but not extra, as this is an Abyssinian letter".
