Abyssinian Field Force
1867 (21 Oct.) stampless entire marked "O.H.M.S." carried privately by military bag to Major Mignon, Assistant Commissioner General, Annesley Bay; The letter from Col. Field, Cmg Advance Brigade reads, "Sir, I have the honour to request you will be so good as to forward immediate notice to Col. Merewether if you not yet done this of the arrival of the Advance Brigade under my command as I consider it important that Col. M should have the earliest intimation of the same." A postscript reads, "At 6 o'clock tomorrow morning I propose coming on shore when I hope to meet you". There is a faint pencil note written by Major Mignon on the reverse flap. There is some light paper ageing but this is thought to be the earliest recorded letter from the campaign. R.P.S. Certificate (2018). Photo
